Wildebeest herds resting on the open savannah of the Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara

Kenya’s most celebrated reserve — big cats, open plains, and the Great Migration.

The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s flagship reserve: rolling savannah dotted with flat-topped acacia, the highest big-cat density in Africa, and — between July and October — the raw drama of the Great Migration.

It rewards first-timers and veterans alike. The reserve itself delivers the iconic scenes; the private conservancies on its borders add quiet game viewing, night drives, and walking safaris with far fewer vehicles.

We plan the Mara around light and movement: where the herds are, where the cats are denning, and where the crowds aren’t.

Why visit

  • The Great Migration river crossings (July–October)
  • Exceptional lion, leopard, and cheetah sightings all year
  • Private conservancies with exclusive access
  • Hot-air balloon safaris at dawn

Wildlife highlights

  • Big cats — arguably Africa’s best
  • Over 1.5 million wildebeest in season
  • Elephant, giraffe, hippo, and 500+ bird species

Best time to visit

July to October for the Migration. January to March is our quiet favourite — calving season, superb predator action, and golden photographic light.

Combines well with

Pairs naturally with Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, or a Diani Beach finish.
